Founded by Dr. Mike Hong

In 1986, Dr. Mike Hong, a South Korean immigrant and a distinguished UCLA graduate in chemistry, turned his dream into reality by founding DuraCoat Products. Driven by a vision to create a coatings company specializing in environmentally friendly products, he took the decisive step of opening DuraCoat's inaugural manufacturing facility in Riverside, California. This marked the inception of a journey characterized by innovation and a commitment to environmentally conscious solutions.

Paving innovation

DuraCoat Products began with a breakthrough water-based coating, setting the stage for success. We swiftly expanded into polyester and siliconized polyester products for coil coating. Our dedication to solving customer challenges led to the creation of Durapon70®, a 70% PVDF coil coating, completing our portfolio. Additionally, we developed spray products for aluminum extrusions used extensively in commercial construction. The introduction of Durapon70® for spray applications marked a pivotal moment. In 2002, we expanded operations with a second plant in Madison, Alabama. With innovation and customer satisfaction at our core, we've become a prominent player in coil and extrusion coatings.

Milestone alliance

In 2016, marking three decades of successful operations, DuraCoat Products entered into a purchase agreement with Axalta Coating Systems. By 2019, this alliance culminated in DuraCoat Products officially becoming the newest addition to the Axalta family. This strategic transaction united two companies with shared business values, a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, and a shared dedication to advancing innovation.

More than a pretty face

Color beautifies a building, but it’s science that extends its life. Dura Coat was founded on science. Science produced the first environmentally-sound coatings that are the foundation of all of the Dura Coat products, and it’s science that our research chemists work with to constantly improve already exceptional coatings.

Our chemist are scientists

They focus on one thing: coil and extrusion coatings for steel, aluminum, and metallic coated metals. Access to the global technology team of Axalta Coatings Systems allows our scientists to adapt emerging technologies in other areas for use in coil and extrusion coatings. Through continuing R&D programs, our chemists develop proprietary coatings that far out-perform yesterday’s favorites.
